2012 No. 23 Crosswinds Syrah 1.5L

A reflection of Proprietor Anthony von Mandl’s vision from three decades ago, the Terroir Collection showcases the Okanagan Valley's unique microclimates and diversity with each wine featuring a photographic image echoing an aspect of its home.

The top 3% of our estate fruit is hand-selected for these wines by our winemaker and each individual lot is carefully tasted throughout the winemaking process to ensure its quality level before the nal blend. The first step begins in the vineyards where we examine soil type, matching that with the clone by specic varietal, adapting to the climate, vineyard altitude and aspect, and the intense vine devotion that is a result of our careful precision farming. Because of this meticulous care, each offering is limited.

For us, the Terroir Collection is the heart of our passion.

Named after the crosswinds that gently pass across the lakes and up and down the valley. Crosswinds is also a poetic reference to the border crossing between Canada and the United States as well as the crossing of the high desert and lakes creating a unique microclimate. Image No.23 illustrates the beauty of the vines as they start to move from budbreak to the next phase of growth. ere is an abundance of natural cover crop as part of our integrated pest management system.

Vinification Notes
Our Crosswinds Syrah is one of two wines in the Terroir Collection that is farmed at two distinct vineyard estate properties. The percentage changes with the vintage quality to ensure that the optimum flavour is in the bottle. A mix of new and old French oak affords a plushness on the palate that extends to the finish. This wine will age well over the next 3-5 years.

Production
The 2012 season started well and early Spring conditions were settled with a couple of chilly mornings, but no frost damage. Bud break was nearly on time, but June brought cooler weather with consistent, intermittent rainfall – nearly half of the normal annual precipitation. A warm and dry summer ensured ideal fruit development resulting in slightly reduced workloads in our vineyards. Yields were spot-on and summer pruning (leaf-thinning, etc.) was not as involved as in previous years. Veraison took place under nearly ideal conditions that lasted from mid- August to the end of September. The continuation of mild, sunny autumn weather allowed the grapes to develop thick skins and gave rise to expectations of flavourful, extracted wines. Cabernet and Merlot flavours in particular were well developed at an earlier stage of sugar ripeness than in previous years, allowing us to harvest earlier and setting up the winemaking team to create wines that reflect the personality of the vintage, and of course, Mission Hill.
