2013 No.39 Whispering Hill Organic Merlot

2013 No.39 Whispering Hill Organic Merlot

A reflection of Proprietor Anthony von Mandl’s vision from three decades ago, the Terroir Collection showcases the Okanagan Valley's unique microclimates and diversity with each wine featuring a photographic image echoing an aspect of its home.

The top 3% of our estate fruit is hand-selected for these wines by our winemaker and each individual lot is carefully tasted throughout the winemaking process to ensure its quality level before the nal blend. The first step begins in the vineyards where we examine soil type, matching that with the clone by specic varietal, adapting to the climate, vineyard altitude and aspect, and the intense vine devotion that is a result of our careful precision farming. Because of this meticulous care, each offering is limited.

For us, the Terroir Collection is the heart of our passion.

The hillsides are dotted by dense stand of Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. Their swaying motion and the stillness in the area inspired the name Whispering Hill. The No. 39 image reflects the rough and seamless nature of cover crops in the organic vineyard rows, one of our sustainability practices.

Vinification Notes
This vineyard, originally a fruit orchard, has been farmed organically for more than 40 years with soils that are high in nutrients and quite porous. The west side vineyard location of our Whispering Hill Organic Merlot results in a significant amount of morning sun exposure, giving way to the shade by afternoon. This leads to late ripening fruit that is more delicate and intensely flavourful.

Vintage 2013 was a season of change – early to start, late to finish, and with exceptional flavour potential. A warmer than normal spring brought early budbreak followed by an extremely rainy June that slowed vine growth. Balance was restored with above average temperatures in July and August allowing grapes to mature along a normal ripening curve. The warmest vintage since 2003 cooled off just in time for harvest. In September, heavy rainfall caused significant delays in the grape harvest resulting in our longest picking season ever. Overall, fruit quality was superb for both red and white varietals and the wines are showing excellent balance and character.
