2013 No.26 Sunrise Road Chardonnay

2013 No.26 Sunrise Road Chardonnay

A reflection of Proprietor Anthony von Mandl’s vision from three decades ago, the Terroir Collection showcases the Okanagan Valley's unique microclimates and diversity with each wine featuring a photographic image echoing an aspect of its home.

The top 3% of our estate fruit is hand-selected for these wines by our winemaker and each individual lot is carefully tasted throughout the winemaking process to ensure its quality level before the nal blend. The first step begins in the vineyards where we examine soil type, matching that with the clone by specic varietal, adapting to the climate, vineyard altitude and aspect, and the intense vine devotion that is a result of our careful precision farming. Because of this meticulous care, each offering is limited.

For us, the Terroir Collection is the heart of our passion.

The sub-appellation where our vineyard is located is called “Golden Mile Bench.” Naming this wine Sunrise Road is a reference to those golden colours associated with the sunrise, a nod to the area and its specific terroir, and the beginning of a new day for innovation. Image No.26 is a curved fenced line on the estate. From a vantage point there, one can look east to the sunrise over the high desert hills.

Vinification Notes
The Sunrise Road Chardonnay is the bedrock of our Chardonnay program. Two decades ago, this vineyard estate was the location for our Avery award-winning wine. From there, we relentlessly pursued a deeper understanding of Chardonnay in the Okanagan Valley, looking at specific micro-sites and clonal studies. This never-ending exploration continues to motivate our winemaking and viticulture teams.

Vintage 2013 was a season of change – early to start, late to finish, and with exceptional flavour potential. A warmer than normal spring brought early budbreak followed by an extremely rainy June that slowed vine growth. Balance was restored with above average temperatures in July and August allowing grapes to mature along a normal ripening curve. The warmest vintage since 2003 cooled off just in time for harvest. In September, heavy rainfall caused significant delays in the grape harvest resulting in our longest picking season ever. Overall, fruit quality was superb for both red and white varietals and the wines are showing excellent balance and character.
